Microgreens can be kosher, but not all of them are, they must be free of bugs and other contaminants. Not every supplement, microgreens, microgreens powders will be kosher.
About Us
Cleanest and Greenest is a informational website to inform about Microgreens and if they can be called “Kosher”. It’s simple project ment to
help you in your nutrition without any risk and worries.
Cleanest and Greenest used to be a microgreens shop, but that part of the website (or business) of selling kosher greens is no longer applicable.
We still believe in microgreens
and promoting them.
Yes, in principle, microgreens are kosher. As simple vegetables, they are considered pareve (neutral, neither meat nor dairy) and are permissible under Jewish dietary laws (kashrut). Like all fresh produce, they do not require any special processing to be inherently kosher.
However, their kosher status in practice depends entirely on one critical factor: the absence of insects.
The primary and most significant concern is insect infestation (tolaim). Jewish law strictly forbids the consumption of almost all insects. Because microgreens are grown densely and have delicate, intricate leaves and stems, they create an ideal environment for tiny insects like aphids, thrips, and mites to hide.
These bugs can be extremely difficult to spot with the naked eye. The dense, matted nature of how microgreens are often sold (still in their growing medium or cut in a clump) makes it very challenging to inspect them thoroughly, which is a requirement for ensuring produce is free of forbidden insects.
If you purchase microgreens without a reliable kosher certification (hechsher), the responsibility to check them falls on you. The process must be meticulous due to their small size.
Rinse Thoroughly: After inspection, a vigorous rinse is recommended. You can place the microgreens in a bowl of cool water, agitate them gently, and then lift them out, leaving any debris or potential pests behind. Some people use a special vegetable wash approved for kosher use.
Separate the Greens: Gently separate the clump of microgreens over a white plate or a lightbox. The white background makes it easier to see any tiny dark specks (potential insects).
Inspect Carefully: Examine a small portion at a time. Look for any signs of movement or any specs that look like tiny bugs on the stems and leaves (both front and back). A magnifying glass can be very helpful for this process.
For many kosher consumers, buying microgreens with a reliable hechsher is the preferred and simplest option. Here’s why:
Assured Compliance: The certification assures the consumer that the produce meets the required standards of kashrut without them needing to perform the difficult and time-consuming inspection process at home.
Removes the Burden of Checking: A certification from a trusted kosher agency indicates that the greens were grown, harvested, and packaged under strict supervision designed to prevent insect infestation. This often involves controlled environments like greenhouses with specific pest-control protocols.
